Are You Missing out on a Key Pilates Ingredient?

By On August 31, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Smiling mat class participant. Pilates as we know it grew from one person and a small bit of space outdoors in the forests of Germany—sans equipment! Yes, the Pilates exercise repertoire has its roots in mat work. Even as Joseph began to create and incorporate equipment into his exercise regimen, he never meant for it to be practiced without the simple and effective mat routine. Both equipment and mat work were important ingredients in the recipe for a healthier and stronger body.

Many years ago I was drawn to Pilates Studio City as a client because of its many excellent and well-priced mat classes. The studio continues to provide this excellent value to its clients. In fact, we were recently named Best Mat Pilates by Los Angeles Magazine for the quality of instruction as well as the value. And to celebrate this honor, we have created a NEW Unlimited Group Class package normally priced $199, but on sale right now for $149!

So What Makes a Mat Class So Powerful?

Simplicity. It is you and gravity (and perhaps a prop or two). And isn’t that life? Us and gravity. Mat classes teach us not to struggle against gravity, but to use it in our favor to create strength and length.

Economy. All you need is a bit of real estate, a slab of ground. It is truly amazing how much your body can work on a six-foot-by-three-foot bit of ground.

Practicality. Mat exercises can work the entire body from head to toe, and they travel well! Learn the moves well, and you will have the equivalent of a full gym inside your head, no assembly required!

Versatility. By working the entire body; developing a wide array of strengths such as stability, mobility, and endurance; and incorporating fun and varied props, mat exercises offer a wide array of options for you and your body. With that in mind, we at Pilates Studio City are going to begin incorporating a specific theme or focus into a few mat classes each month. September’s focus: SHOULDERS!

The Beautiful and Versatile Shoulder Joint!

The Beautiful and Versatile Shoulder Joint

From laptops to steering wheels to holding phones to our ears, our poor shoulders do take a beating! If anyone ever thinks about their shoulders, it is generally negative: “my shoulders are tight,” “there is a big knot in my shoulder,” or “where did my neck go?”

While it is true that many people suffer from shoulder pain and/or injuries, we should never forget how much our shoulders do for us. Even more importantly, we should not forget what we can do for them! With a little focused work—learning how to properly carry and engage the shoulder as well as release and strengthen it—we’ll soon be saying, “My shoulders feel so free and loose! Why, it’s been months since I have had any knots or pain in my shoulders. Hey, I have a neck!”

Try one of our shoulder-focused mat classes this month to learn more about this amazing joint and how you can improve your daily shoulder experience!
