Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pilates?
“Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”
-Joseph H. Pilates
The Pilates Method is an approach in mind & body integration that was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. The fundamental principles focus on balance, concentration, control, centered awareness, fluid movements, and breathe. Pilates enhances a core strength that increases flexibility, coordination and special awareness. The repertoire is performed as a mat class or on specialized equipment utilizing springs for resistance. Pilates engages the whole person, not just the muscles. For everybody from an athlete to mother, Pilates will develop and enhance stamina, posture, alignment & core strength for elite performance to everyday activities.
Q. What’s the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Pilates mainly concentrates on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Also, Pilates is a valuable tool for increasing strength, definition and proper posture. Yoga aims to work the body equally and unite the body with mind and spirit. Yoga is often considered therapeutic when compared to Pilates, as it helps people find harmony and release stress. Yoga has many different styles, but all are generally performed in a group setting on a Yoga mat with the aid of a Yoga instructor. Pilates has a full component of mat work, but it also incorporates work on Pilates machines which help build a longer, leaner, dancer-like physique.
Q. Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates is famous for creating long, lean, fit bodies. There are many ways that doing Pilates supports weight loss and a trimmer appearance:
- Exercise burns calories. How many calories you burn depends on your body type and your level of exertion.
- Creating lean muscle mass, as Pilates does, is one of the best ways to increase your calorie-burning potential.
- Pilates tones and shapes the body.
- One of the best ways to look and feel thinner is to have beautiful posture. Pilates creates a leaner look by emphasizing both length and good alignment.
- Pilates promotes deep and efficient respiration, which is essential for calorie burning and tissue regeneration.
- Engaging in an exercise program, like Pilates, promotes self-esteem and heightened lifestyle consciousness. Both are associated with weight loss.
- Pilates is an enlivening workout that can help sustain energy levels throughout your day. However, it is not usually done as aerobic exercise. Therefore, some people enjoy combining Pilates with aerobic/cardio exercise in order to maximize their weight loss.
Q. Do I have to be in shape to do Pilates?
No! Anyone can start Pilates and any level. It will be catered to meet you where you are. In fact, we like when clients find us and are just beginning their journey in Pilates. Then we can teach them the language of Pilates from the beginning.
Q. What’s the difference between working out on the equipment and the Pilates Mat classes?
Mat classes really focus on core work and require you to support your body and are very challenging. Pilates equipment gives you a frame to work within that is often more helpful than mat but can be more challenging when springs are added or taken away. Working on the equipment can also target and tone specific areas of your body very efficiently.
Q. What is involved in the Initial Private session? Is it just a consultation or am I going to get a workout?
It is a consultation with a Private Pilates Instructor and also a workout. During the session the instructor will assess your specific body needs and personal goals and begin to teach you the fundamentals of Pilates. Because it is new, you will be working slowly and it is a great challenge. You’re going to love it and your instructor will recommend what the next step is for you such as more privates, mat classes or group reformer, etc.
Q. Who is a good teacher? Who has the most Pilates experience?
All our teachers are highly qualified Pilates instructors and have been teaching different lengths of time. We only hire the best! Each teacher has a distinct style and personality and our goal is to help you connect with your teacher and be inspired to move. We promise to work hard in making that happen. Check out our Instructor Profiles here!
Q. Which is a better workout, Mat or Reformer?
Both are fantastic workouts and compliment each other. Mat is challenging because you are on your own and have to control and challenge your body with just that, your body and mind. Reformer is a great workout because you have the machine to support you and also the added weight with springs to really work on specific areas of your body and challenge it. People like them for different reasons and it is a personal choice. Doing both is the traditional way of practicing Pilates.
Q. How often should I do Pilates each week?
The ideal practice of Pilates is 3 times per week. However, you need to take into consideration – time, finances, stress level and burning out. We suggest starting with one session (100% more than you are doing now!) and adding more sessions when you can. You can also try a Mat or Group Reformer class, providing you are approved to do so. You will see results quickly if you do more sessions each week.
Q. Can I take mat classes instead of an Initial Private because I’ve done Pilates before?
We recommend doing the Initial Private even if you have done Pilates before so you can brush up on your Pilates, get a great deal and do a Private with a teacher who will guide you to the right class for your level. If you really would rather jump right into mat then you will need to begin with Level 1. If you are a Pilates teacher or have done Pilates for a long time (maybe just visiting from out of town) and are confident that you have the language and exercises you can take a Level 2.
Q. What is the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2 class? (both Group Reformer and Mat)
- Level 1 (for both Group Reformer & Mat) will move a bit slower and take the time to explain exercises so each client knows how to execute the movement in a safe manner. Clients are challenged by working on the fundamental exercises in Pilates in a deep and connected manner.
- Level 2 class is tailored to the more experienced student. Students will continue to work on Level 1 exercises while more advanced exercises will be introduced and integrated. Students are expected to know Level 1 exercises and are challenged by a class that flows.
- Level 3 is an advanced class that will challenge the client with flow, focus, concentration, control and stamina. The client must be injury free and able to do Level 2 classes.
Q. I’m new, but none of the Level 1 classes are at times that are good for me. Can I just start with Level 2?
If you are new to Pilates then we really suggest you begin with Level 1. Clients are encouraged do Privates at least 3 or 4 times so you can be confident you know the exercises and can join a Level 2 class. There is lot to learn and you will get the most out of your Pilates if you learn it the correct way!
Q. What type/style/etc of Pilates do your instructors teach?
All teachers here come from a variety of Certified and PMA approved Teacher Training Programs. PMA, the Pilates Method Alliance, is the professional association and certifying agency for Pilates teachers. Most teachers teach a progressive approach to Pilates and incorporate neutral spine. We do have a few teachers who know the classical repertoire and you can read more about each individual in our teacher profiles section of our website.
Q. Why is there a 24 hour cancellation policy? What if I get sick or have an emergency?
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy because we are a professional studio and our teachers reserve the time and keep it available for each client. They are booked by the hour in each shift. 24 hours allows the studio and teacher to book another client and fill that void. We know that unforeseen emergencies come up. However, traffic, work and being under the weather are cancellations so please always cancel ahead of time if you foresee that happening.
Q. I don’t understand why I have to take the Initial Private session before taking Group Reformer classes because I’m an advanced student that has been taking Pilates for years at other places.
It is our studio policy so you get the most out of your group reformer classes and are safe. The teacher working with you will recommend you to the class that is right for you.
Q. I just want to take mat classes. Do I HAVE to take an Initial Private session?
Our policy for safety and correct class placement is for all clients to take an Initial Private. However, if you decide to not take an Initial Private then you may start with a Level 1 Pilates Mat class.
Q. How long do I need to take Pilates for me to see changes in my body?
In less than one month you will feel and hopefully even visually see a difference. Everyone responds differently but wonderful changes will happen if you commit to doing Pilates every week! “10 sessions- Feel the difference. 20 sessions- See the difference. 30 sessions- Have a new body!” -Joseph Pilates
Q. Is Pilates only focused on the core?
Everything you do in Pilates is supported from the core (transverse abdominals, pelvic floor, spinal muscles and diaphragm make up the core). Pilates also focuses on breath, balance, flexibility, coordination, control, stamina, toning, posture and overall health.
Q. I want 6 pack abs. Will Pilates help me achieve that?
Pilates will do that and much more by creating a balanced approach to core strengthening that will tone and lean out your abdominal muscles and cinch in your waist.
Q. Do you have a lot of male clients? Do they take the group classes (reformer and mat)?
Yes we have a growing number of male clients. And they take all of our classes!
Q. Can I do my Initial Private session with my friend/husband/etc.?
Yes you can but you will each have to pay $39. We do recommend that you do your own because each person has unique issues and body types so an Initial Private is very beneficial. You can then go right into semi privates if you have a partner and want to work together.
Q. I have herniated discs in my back. Can I do Pilates? Will it be good for my back?
Yes, Pilates is wonderful for back issues! Pilates is able to help in back pain treatment mainly in two ways. The first is by the strengthening your muscles and making them more flexible, while the second is through improving your posture. Pilates enables your joints and muscles to become stronger and more flexible. By doing so, you will be able to make them tough enough to withstand the strain and other stresses that happen as you are doing your regular activities. When your muscles are stronger, they can withstand injury better. When the muscles are more flexible, you have less risk of straining them when you contort your body into awkward positions. In this regard, Pilates would really help you in your back pain treatment.
Having stronger and more flexible muscles would definitely help in preventing back pain from occurring again. One of the leading causes of back pain is poor posture. A person’s poor posture, whether while standing or sitting, contribute to the unnecessary strain in the muscles that would eventually make them feel pain. A person who does the Pilates exercises would be able to improve their posture because of the movements and training that they do. The exercises would make it easier for the person to stand straight, not slouch, and avoid other poor positions that contribute to the back pain.
Q. I recently had surgery. Can I take Pilates?
Yes, depending on what type of surgery. We do require a medical release from your doctor. Once you have received clearance, an instructor will then be able to work with you to begin strengthening and getting you back to your best self!
Q. I’m pregnant, can I take group classes? Which ones are safe for me to take?
We recommend you take privates when you are pregnant. Your body is going through so many changes and many adjustments will have to be made that only a private session can allow for. If you are a current client you can continue with your current Pilates schedule (classes and privates) through the 1st trimester (3-4 months). Then you will need to have the teachers approval to continue in a group class after 4 months. If you need to take ½ hour privates (they are more affordable for some people) this may be an option once we find a teacher to accommodate that ½ appointment time.
Q. Can you tell me about specialty classes (Nia, Zumba, etc, and Gyrokinesis/Gyrotonic)?
Please click here for more info on Specialty Classes.
Q. Do I have to be coordinated to do Zumba or Nia?
Absolutely not. Zumba & Nia will help improve your coordination! It is all about having fun and getting a cardio workout.
Q. I’m interested in renting space at your studio and I have never been here before. What do I need to do?
We have plenty of rental space at our studios. Please call the studio for rates and to schedule a time to come meet with a manager/owner so you may get a feel for the studio and all the necessary information and paperwork required.
