Make your Joints Happy and Healthy!

How would you describe your joints? Grinding or gliding? Creaky or smooth? Stiff, stuck, and grumpy? Or mobile, slippery, and happy? Well, not only can those joints hear you (so watch your language), but you can help pull them out of the daily grind and into free and happy movement! Take one of our featured group classes in March to learn how!
“Motion is lotion, if you rest you rust!” A little saying that means quite a lot. Our joints are our body’s shock absorbers, giving us comfortable freedom of movement throughout our day. One of the reasons our joints remain healthy and happy is by way of little fluid-filled sacs called bursa that release synovial fluid and help cushion our joints. Think of a car and how motor oil is needed to keep all of its parts moving smoothly. We need synovial fluid in that same way. Without it, we’d be in a world of pain, and I’m sure some of you out there have already experienced what a degenerative/unhappy joint can feel like. Ouch!

Our joints need motion to spread this wonderful fluid around. So try these exercises at home then come see us in mat class for some more slippery joint fun!

  • Here’s a great warm-up for your knees: Seated in a chair, slowly raise your leg until it is straight. Hold for a moment and then slowly lower it. Repeat this motion 10 to 15 times with each leg. 

  • For your hips and back lie down with your knees folded into your chest. Slowly stir your knees in gentle opposing circles, keeping the small of your back connected to the floor. Repeat this motion 10 times, and then reverse.
